When times are tough –the tough save money. This is a great topic that is on the minds of everyone today. As the government tries to get out of debt by borrowing and spending more money, the rest of us are looking for ways to cut our expenses, pay off our debts and save more.
It seems to be working for us –but not the government. The savings rate of US households increased to a 30-year high of 6.7% and total consumer debt fell for the first time in 22 years. Meanwhile, government debt balloned by 120% and spending this year will increase by nearly 40%.

One great way of saving money on food is going to farmers’ markets. The trick is when to go. Go about an hour to a half hour before closing time. The sellers are eager to get rid of produce and meat that will spoil, so they practically give it away. I remember we did this once years ago with some friends of my husband. We traveled to Qualertown farmers market and they bought several hundred dollars worth of food, mostly fresh meat for up to 75% off the going price. We went to the Gilbertsville “sale” and bought two large boxes of strawberries for $3 the one week, and a double box the following week for $2.50. We also got some sugar free Tastykakes (overdated slightly) for $1 which retailed for $4. Since food is a necessity, it pays to go at these odd hours. It’s also a night out.
